"ABOUT THE AUDIO GUIDE
Use the audio guide to become better acquainted with the work of the Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir from a new perspective. The actress Saskia Rosendahl – known for her role in the television series ‘Babylon Berlin’ – takes you on a tour of nineteenth-century France. In audio tracks and illustrations, surprising connections are drawn between Impressionism and the French art of the eighteenth century in roughly sixty minutes.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Pierre-Auguste Renoir is one of the outstanding painters of French Impressionism – and much more than that. In a major special exhibition, the Städel Museum is for the first time taking an intensive look at the surprising references in his work to Rococo art, which are expressed in Renoir’s penchant for a loose, sketchy style of painting, radiant colours, and themes such as outdoor festivities, strolls, and family life.
The exhibition brings together approximately 120 important paintings, drawings, and sculptures from the museum’s own holdings and international collections. By juxtaposing Renoir’s art with works from the eighteenth century – by artists such as François Boucher, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and Antoine Watteau – and his contemporaries, including Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, and Berthe Morisot, a brilliant overview of Impressionism’s multi-layered artistic engagement with Rococo art emerges.
